This innovative sensing solutionis applicable to industriesthat convert plies of materialsinto embossed napkins, papertowels, plastic-lined paper tablecloths, and other consumerproducts. The Model SS100 WebSensing System usesMICROSONIC®, thru-beam sensorsto eliminate the costly problemof broken plies wrappingaround, heating up, and damagingembossing rolls, as well asthe resulting downtime requiredto make necessary repairs.They also eliminate false tripsor no trips at all resulting fromdusty environments, or problemsassociated with sensorsnot immune to changing colorsand materials.What does the SS100Web Sensing System do?Equipped with up to threepairs (transmitter and receiver)of MICROSONIC®, thru-beamsensors, the SS100 systemmonitors the entire width of theembossed web as it leaves theembossing rolls. Machinespeeds in excess of 26 feet persecond as well as dust, differentcolors and textures have noeffect on the sensing capabilityof these sensors. During operation,when one of the sensorsdetects a tear in the web, amissing ply or even a hole in theweb of predetermined size, theSS100 system immediately outputsan alarm signal. The signalcan be used to alert an operator,automatically shear the paperahead of the embossingrolls, or automatically stop themachine. As a result, the embossingrolls are saved fromsevere damage and time-consumingrepairs. After the web isrethreaded, the embossing partof the operation can resume.Using the amount of soundenergy transmitted through theplies of material to calibrate thesystem and detect the breaks,the SS100 system operates ona supply voltage of 85 to 270VAC (50/60 Hz). The supply currentranges from 10 to 40 (typical)mA. Three push-buttons areprovided to calibrate the detector,set and reset the indicationsof a ply break, and view andsometimes change the varioussettings. A digital display providesvarious information oneach of the sensor pair channelsand a numeric displayshows, sequentially, the signalstrength
